Community Gardening, Take 2

Remember last summer when we invited a bunch of our friends to garden with us at the cabin?  Well, we're at it again!  We added a few more families to the mix and took what we learned from last year's experience.  Saturday was a beautiful day for a garden party...warm and sunny with no wind.  Seven families were able to join us for a pot luck lunch, followed by planting.
Brian did a lot more prep work this time, so the entire day went much smoother.  Since we bought our own rototiller last fall, he was able to rototill the soil multiple times.  He made the rows wider this year so that he can rototill down the rows even after the plants are in.  This will help keep the weeds under control.  He staked out all the rows and labeled each one so we would know where things were planted this year.  I put up string between the stakes so the kids would have an easier time remembering where the rows were (i.e. where NOT to walk) and so the lines would be straight.  Brian also put up some fence panels for the cucumbers and peas so they won't sprawl all over the garden.

As with last year, the kids had a blast digging in the dirt and planting things!

My favorite moment of the afternoon came at the end, when it was time to water.  Some of the littler girls really wanted to do it, but it was a delicate job because if the hose got dragged on the ground, it might rip out some of the seeds or plants.  Without any help from the adults, the girls came up with an awesome idea.

Nice work, team!

Maya rode in the backpack for some of the afternoon until she was too tuckered out to stay awake.
